How Soon Is Now? is a song by the English rock band The Smiths from their 1984 album Meat Is Murder. It is a hypnotic, melancholic track that has become one of the band's most iconic songs. Its emotional depth has earned it a lasting place in alternative music history. I also have a (quite ancient at this point) HOW SOON IS NOW? tattoo.

HOW IS THIS SITE MADE?

very slowly... how soon is now? is (currently?) hosted on neocities with a custom domain name and cloudflare integration. i used to code directly in the neocities editor, and save after every little change. that's how i managed to rack up over 17,000 updates as of writing this, lmao. since then i've moved onto greener pastures; nowadays i deploy to neocities through github, and code with visual studio code on a locally stored version of my website on my machine.

these are my tools

  • visual studio code
  • adobe photoshop 2025
  • notepad
  • firefox

do you back-up your site?

yes, it is currently backed up on
  • my machine
  • neocities
  • github repository
  • google drive (manually, infrequently)

how did you make writings?

writings is built with a static site generator called quartz. a static site generator is a tool that takes your content (like text and images) and templates (like page designs) and turns them into simple, fast websites made of plain HTML files and sometimes other files. quartz transforms markdown content into a static site, and has many built-in features that are often useful for those interested in digital gardening or blogging. i use obsidian to make the markdown files, which is an incredibly quick and easy to use program. then i use vs code to simultaneously build the static site and deploy to a folder here on my website, /writings/.

how do i deploy to neocities using github?

i recommend this very straightforward tutorial. there is also a vs code extension for pushing directly to neocities (not through github), though i personally have never used it and cannot attest to its credibility.

how do i put my quartz site on neocities?

for just deploying quartz to neocities via github, you can follow this tutorial, though take note that this assumes you want quartz to be the root directory of your neocities. otherwise the simplest way is to just build quartz then drag and drop the entire quartz folder into your neocities. ta-da! for automatic building, building to a custom subdirectory in your neocities, deploying, etc., I made an in-depth tutorial of my workflow.

how do i do X thing or learn html/css?

there are thousands of guides and tutorials out there, and i also suggest asking and using AI. i don't have a web philosophy but i do believe that AI can serve many positive purposes, and one of them is to function as a wonderful educational and generative tool. i believe most things are good in moderation, and that includes AI. using AI to make your entire site? not good. using AI to help you with a specific facet of it? awesome. google is your friend too, and i also post tutorials from time to time.

how accessible is your site?

A WebAIM survey found that of 1,214 people with disabilities, 87.6% rely on screen readers.[1]

most pages are responsive and compatible on mobile. you can check my site map for the full compatibility key. other than that, there isn't any autoplay music because i find it quite annoying and startling myself, i am slowly adding alt attribute to each image, and i attempt to maintain at least somewhat sufficient color contrast, though at the end of the day my site is a creative outlet for me so i prioritize that more than anything. my writings also has a light mode/dark mode toggle by default and i use semantic HTML when i remember to.

where do you find assets/resources?
